Identified Factory Engraved Winchester 1866 .44 Rimfire caliber rifle. Made in 1868. Has a 24" barrel is .44 Rimfire caliber. This gun is in excellent condition with a mixture of original blue that rates 50% with 50% of a plum patina on the barrel. The frame, lever, forend cap, magazine, and butt plate. The frame has the early style Henry engraving with the floral scenes. The buttstock is a factory original deluxe checkered stock that has been repaired at the wrist with nickel steel plates. The forend is a replacement. The stock on the left-hand side is inlaid with a silver badge shaped presentation plate to “M.M. Pomeroy/LaCrosse, Wis/May 15,1868". There is a second presentation on the cleaning rod trap on the butt plate that reads “From/M.M. Pomeroy/TO/Col/James E./Jones/Sept 1873". This is a very interesting gun and maybe the only one with two presentations. The noted collector Ben Michelle had this gun in his collection and did an extensive amount of research. He gave his findings in a presentation to the American Society of Arms Collectors. Marcus M. “Brick" Pomeroy was the editor of the LaCrosse, Wisconsin newspaper, The LaCrosse Democrat, from 1869-1887. He was a “Copperhead" which was a confederate sympathizer. The presentation date had to do with the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, who Pomeroy had campaigned against. The second presentation still remains a bit of a mystery due to the common name of “James E. Jones". Very fine historical Winchester 1886 factory engraved rifle!
