Description:
Newton Model 1916 .256 Newton Caliber. This rifle has had some changes over the years and is a nice example of a rare caliber. The .256 was the most well known of the Newton propriatary calibers and one of the earliest loadings to get close to 3000 FPS. It shoots a 100-140 grain 6.5mm bullet through segmented rifling at around achieved velocities of 2964 FPS. This was an amazing achievement for 1916! Details of the 1916 rifles can be found in Lawrence Wales wonderful book and guide to the Newton. These are take down rifles that take down via lowering the floorplate which is hinged and simply unscrewing the main bolt by using the floorplate as a handle, then lifting the barreled action out of the stock. This particular rifle has had adjustments over the years, they are as follows: Non matching stock, rear barrel band sight removed, front sight has been changed. The action on this rifle is in nice condition and has some wear to the blue, set trigger works well, both front and rear bridges have been drilled and tapped for scope mounts and bases, left mounted Redfield peep sight. The barrel is 24" with a later applied front sight, barrel band rear sight has been removed, the blue is nice and the segmented rifling is clean with a clean chamber and no throat erosion. The stock is a later custom stock by an unknown maker that is very close in form to an original. There is a minor crack on the right side of the action that terminates at the bolt cutout and there are two very minor cracks next to the front takedown screw near the front of the floorplate, no chequering and finish is minimal, 13 1/2" length of pull to a Model 70 Winchester steel buttplate, steel grip cap Non Newton design, Schnable fore end. This is a nice example of a 3xxx serial number range Newton for a very reasonable price. 034891 MHSSDP $1250.00
