This is a fantastic example with gorgeous chiseled work. The grips are ebony and beautifully carved floral and tendril patterns with contrasting background stippling and most unusual. These Raphael revolvers were named for the arms dealer who sold them to the U.S government for the Civil War. The actual manufacturer was a French firm of Pidault-Cordier model 1860. Caliber 11 mm. The revolvers for the U.S Government were not fancy or chiseled or fitted with deluxe grips. 106 revolvers were purchased on September 1861 from George Raphael Company. This rare revolver has several features, the loading system being one. The condition is excellent. Barrel length 5 7/8" and overall length is 10 ½". Rare, unusual system, superior chiseling and grip carving. U.S martial contract revolver. This deluxe example was for some special purpose.
