Description:
"

Charles Newton Percussion Double Side by Side Combination Gun. The overall length is approx. 38.5". The barrels are approx. 21.5". They are about 16 Gauge smoothbore and .62 caliber rifled with bright near excellent bores showing a little light oxidation. The barrels show 95% of their Damascus pattern with a few areas of light pitting. The rib has most of its Damascus pattern, again with a few areas of pitting. The barrels have a bead style front sight and five leaf rear, one standing and four folding graduated to 400 yards with platinum index lines. The top of the rib is maker marked “Charles Newton (Late Rooke) Maker". The patent breech has platinum blow out plugs. The breech area, tang, lock, hammers, buttplate tang, patchbox, and trigger guard are nicely scroll engraved and show strong case colors. The pendulum style patchbox lid has a recumbent Tiger engraving. The English walnut stock is fine showing light dings and handling marks, crisp edges, and very good original varnish. There is coarse wraparound checkering at the at the wrist and forearm and there is a small age crack in the right stock flat which extends to the front of the lock. The locks are crisp and mechanically functional. The gun is equipped with swivel eyes beneath the barrel and on the bottom of the buttstock. The original ramrod is present. Charles Newton was the successor to George Rooke. He operated at 15 Bath Street, Birmingham, from 1857 to 1888. This quality combination “buck and ball" double gun is ready for the finest collection.
