Description:
The PSL 54 is one of the most famous designated marksman rifles (DMR) ever produced, and now, thanks to Century Arms, it is available to on the American market. The PSL 54 features tough construction with respect to its parts. This is unsurprising given the rifle’s origins. Was originally created during the late 60s/early 70s to replace Romania’s WWII-vintage BRNO built VZ-24 sniper rifles. Despite its strong resemblance to then Soviet SVD, the two rifles are unrelated. The Romanians wisely chose to base the PSL upon the easy to mass produce RPK receiver. Inside, the PSL is a straight Kalashnikov with an AK-type trigger mechanism, bolt, carrier and recoil spring assembly. Like the RPK, the PSL’s parts are beefed up compared to the typical AK-47. Examples include a bulged/forged front trunnion, a thick 1.5 mm receiver made of heat treated steel, and a 4140 steel bolt which is carburized. This means the bolt is case hardened to a higher hardness level while the core remains sufficiently ductile to prevent cracking. The 24.5” barrel is made from 4140 steel and features a chrome-lined barrel. The PSL-54 is designed to function with all commercially available ammo, however, 148gr bullets are generally the heaviest that should be used. Heavier bullets could hurt the PSL in the long term. For the best accuracy, use Match-marked ammo if possible. Most 7.62x54R ammo is intended for use in machine guns rather than a DMR, hence their accuracy is rather mediocre. Using regular ammo in the PSL usually gives roughly 1.75 to 3 MOA at distance. Proper Match ammo can reduce this to 1.25 to 1.5 MOA. Remember, the PSL is a Designated Marksman Rifle, NOT a sniper rifle. Like the VSKA and BFT-47 rifles, the PSL 54 sports the RAK-1 Enhanced trigger group for an all-round better trigger pull. The left side of the receiver is fitted with the classic AK-style side mount rail. The thumbhole stock is designed to put the shooter’s index finger the proper distance from the trigger. To those unfamiliar with the PSL, the length of pull appears to be fairly short at 12.5 inches; however, this was done to accommodate thick winter clothing or body armor. This brand new in the box rifle comes with a Texas Precision Optics SD4x26S scope. It mimics the original Romanian optics. One major difference is that the battery compartment is sized for a Western battery. Original Romanian or Russian optics usually take larger batteries, and these generally must be converted to use the smaller Western equivalents with the result that the battery is surrounded by a lot of wasted space. The scope has an extendable sunshade at the front just like the original Romanian optics. The scope comes with its own box and manual. The PSL 54 comes with one 10-round magazine.
