Description:
Colt 1895 US Navy Revolver & Holster -- Just Like Teddy Roosevelt's--

This is a good Span Am War US Navy marked Colt Model 1895 Double Action New Navy Revolverwith a desirable antique serial number in the 89,000 range. It was made in 1897, the year before Spanish American War.  These saw service in the hands of Sailors and US Marines during the war in Cuba as well as the Philippines.  Almost all Colt 1889 and 1895 US Navy's were either inspected by Kimball or Ensign Nathan CTwining but this one falls into a very small batch inspected by Ensign Frank S. Schofield who inspected for the Navy at Colt for just 10 months from June 1897 to early 1898.  During that time, Ensign Schofield inspected 1,000 Model 1895's that were in the 89,000 serial range. This was probably the last batch of 1895's ordered by the US Navy before War was declared against Spain in 1898.  The bottomstrap is marked USN over and Anchor Symbol, 38DA with a US Navy Trident symbol underneath, then the Navy's registration number (which was in succession to the original 5000 Model 1889's ordered...this one is 8127.  Then FHS (Frank H. Schofield) over the Colt serial number in the 89,000 range.  Cosmetically, it is identical to one Teddy Roosevelt carried up San Juan Hill with the Rough Riders of the 1st USV Cavalry.  His was recovered from the Captain's safe of the USS Maine and was given to Roosevelt by his brother in law who was in charge of salvage operations following the explosion in early 1898 in Cuba.  At that time, believe it or not, Roosevelt was the acting Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

This one has the Standard 6" barrel, caliber .38 Colt, blued finish, and checkered hard rubber grips with the plain "COLT" at the top.  Overall, the gun grades to NRA Antique Very Good Condition with about 20% original blued finish remaining with the balance of the metal having turned to a pleasing smooth brown patina. The trigger and hammer show portions of their original fire blue.  This nice thing about this revolver is that unlike so many we find today, this one never had its USN property marks ground off the butt of the gun when they were decommissioned and sold as surplus on the civilian market.  The assembly numbers are matching on the, inside of the frame, cylinder crane, and cylinder latch.   The Barrel Address has the correct patent dates running from 1884 to 1895.  Action cycles in Double and Single Action Modes but has definitely been used over the past 120+ years.  It has a Good Plus Bore. Original front sight has never been bobbed.  The original grips are in very good condition with decent checkering, nice New Navy "COLT" motifs and no cracks, chips, or repairs.
While we search all over for Colt DA's with early antique serial numbers, one of the most challenging variations to find are these US Navy Model 1895's. The few USN marked 1895's we do come across are usually post Span-Am War with later non-antique production serial numbers.  Great opportunity to acquire the same gun Teddy Roosevelt used when he rode with the Rough Riders in Cuba.  $25.00 shipping in lower 48 via USPS Priority Mail.  Buyer must be 21 years old and a law-abiding US Citizen.  Antique, No FFL required under Federal law however state and local laws vary.  No sales to NY, NJ, or HI unless to an FFL.  No sales to NYC, Chicago, or DC.  Sorry, no international sales.
