Description:
I recently saw Shiloh Civil War Relics selling one of these Massachusetts swallowtail coatees as a Civil War era jacket, but I had always thought they were likely made right after the Civil War, so my price is substantially less than their price was.  It is true that the coatee has a total of 37 Civil War era Massachusetts Volunteer Militia coat sized buttons on it. Thirty-five of those buttons are original to the jacket and have the Civil War era backmark of Scovill Mfg Co./Waterbury with an inner and outer ring.  The jacket was missing 2 coat buttons when I purchased it, and I did add two coat sized buttons to complete its look, one with the Civil War era backmark of D. Evans & Co/Attleboro Mass, and the other the Civil War era backmark of Waterbury Button Co/Extra.  While the majority of the buttons remain as originally attached, a number of buttons had come loose over the years and have been resewn to the jacket, some of those I admit because I used to let my nephews dress up in the jacket and take photos of them holding Civil War weapons.  The jacket has 4 smaller Massachusetts buttons on each cuff, all again bearing Civil War era Scovill backmarks. The collar has a small Massachusetts button on each side, one being a Civil War era button to match those on the cuffs, the other a slightly postwar Massachusetts Volunteer Militia button.  The jacket comes with 2 beautiful epaulets, the trim of which matches the trim on the jackets.  Each epaulet has a small Civil War era General Staff button attached. The jacket is in remarkably strong condition for its age.  There is only slight scattered mothing, and staining and some small tears in the lining.  One of the inner coattails has a secret pocket built into it.  The jacket would make a beautiful display on a mannequin.  Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition.  Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states.  Shipping charge $35 towards cost of Priority Mail with full insurance.  Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping.
