Description:
**** PRICE REDUCED ****  This fantastic Colt revolver returned to the collectors’ market in 2014 from the Norm Flayderman Estate Collection via James D. Julia s. It was cataloged as lot 2096.
It has the original Colt blue and color case hardening with a 7 ½” Octagonal barrel with a brass pin sight and one line address. The left side of the frame has a small “Colts Patent” and the trigger guards left shoulder has “36 CAL” marked. The once silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap contain a varnished one-piece walnut grip with the matching number “3136” marked in the backstrap channel. The buttstrap is fitted with a factory lanyard ring. The Cylinder has the Ormsby Naval Battel scene roll marking, and 5 of the 6 safety pins are present.
Overall, the condition is Very Fine Plus, and mechanically in fine working condition. It is all matching, including the wedge, Cylinder and Grip. The Rammer handle is properly un-numbered. The Barrel retains about 90% glossy original blue with sharp edge wear, some very fine pin prick surface rust and a series of very fine scratches with nicks and scratches around the wedge slot. The bore is bright and shiny with several spots of pitting. The rammer pivot retains bright case colors and the handle darkened case colors. The Frame retains about 95% of the original case colors lightly faded on the sides and moderately faded on the recoil shields. The hammer retains faded case colors. The Cylinder retains about 75% thinning original blue with edge wear & a Cyl. line and shows about 95% of the Ormsby Naval Battle Scene roll marking. The Trigger guard and Backstrap have traces of original silver in protected areas and overall a nice mellow patina. The Front strap has a few small dings. The grip has some light battering by the left toe and a few light dings and scratches with moderate edge wear and retains about 90% original varnish.
This Colt was made in 1867 during the height of the Great Western migration of Manifest Destiny when repeating side arms were in great demand. The “51 Navy was one of the most popular sidearms on the American Frontier, used by citizens on both side of the law including such notables as Wild Bill Hickock who carried a pair of these revolvers.
Examples of the Colt M-1851 Navy Revolvers are seldom found in high condition with original finish such as this one. This is clearly an Investment Grade Revolver that would grace the finest collection.
Serial Number 203136, .36 Cal with a 7 ½” Barrel. Antique, Proof of age & residence required.
