Description

High-grade m1840 cavalry saber presented to an officer of the 1st Maine Cavalry on Christmas in 1861. Retailed by Horstmann of Philadelphia, the saber (or sword )is in very fine conditon- its grip, hilt, and polished steel scabbard are practically immaculate. The blade’s etching, exhibiting typical patriotic motifs, is bright and stunning. The grip is sharkskin with dragoon twist wire and two flanking strands. The scabbard is polished steel with all steel mountings.
A valuable piece in its own right, the saber is enhanced by its inscription: “Presented to 1st Lieut. CH Baker by Co. H 1st Maine Cavalry, Christmas 1861,” executed on its knuckle bow.
This once belonged to lifelong collector of 1st Maine cavalry items, Glen Gagne. Additionally, this saber was once sold by The Horse Soldier in Gettysburg, Pa., and Poulin s.

The 1st Maine Cavalry was a heavily engaged unit that saw over 40 battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Over the course of its long and active service, the regiment lost over 500 of its men. Material relating to the 1st Maine Cavalry is highly prized. Charles H. Baker was a 26 year old resident of Skowhegan, ME when he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on 11/5/61. On that date he was commissioned into Co. H, 1st Maine Cavalry.
