Description:
The AYA Model Senior (marketed as the “Premier” in the UK) was long reputed to be the finest shotgun ever made in Spain.  These bespoke guns, of which only about 40 were ever made between the years 1979 and 1987, were closely modeled after the Purdey and were built with Beesley self-opening actions.

This AYA Senior, serial number 577631, was made in 1983 in the more desirable pre-DIARM era and has been confirmed by AYA records to be one of only a few that were originally ordered with 2 sets of barrels.  The gun retains 98% of its factory original blue and case colors.  It features a Beesley Self-Opener action with double intercepting sears, triple locking system with a hidden third bite, double triggers with an articulated front, disk set strikers, gold cocking indicators, selective automatic ejectors, gas escape vents, initials oval in buttstock, concave rib, and a pair of 28" & 24” chopper lump, chrome-nickel steel barrels with 2 ¾” chambers, both with single ivory front beads, and marked "1" & "2". The 28” (No. "1") barrels are choked .008/.012, and the 24” (No. "2") barrels are fitted with Briley thin wall choke tubes.

The gun weighs 6lbs. 15.5oz. with the 28” barrels. The bore diameter of the 28" barrels is .722/.726 (both sets of barrels are the same diameter right and left). The minimum barrel wall thickness is .026/.022 for the 28” barrels.  The gun has an English stock and Splinter fore end. The dimensions of the stock with its leather-covered pad are 14 1/2" LOP, 2 1/8" drop at heel, 1 1/2" drop at comb, and 3/8” cast off.  All the checkering is excellent.  Speculation is that a previous owner had someone unsuccessfully try to install choke tubes on the shorter barrels and that they were then cut to 24”.  Briley subsequently installed thin wall tubes on the shortened 24” barrels. The sale includes an as-new CSMC oak & leather 2bbl gun case with snap caps, an oil bottle, a 2-piece wooden cleaning rod, a canvas protective travel cover, and a leather maker's label.

When I had this gun cleaned and lubricated by Dustin Mount, a gunsmith who trained with Purdey and is one of the only people in the USA qualified to work on Purdeys, we compared it to over a dozen Purdey doubles he had stored in his shop at the time.  Dustin concluded that it was an extremely high-quality, faithful reproduction of a Purdey.  He was especially impressed with the engraving.  My research into the AYA Senior reveals that most of them were most probably engraved by AYA’s master engraver, Jose Antonio Albizu Agirrebena.

This is a unique opportunity to own a faithful Purdey reproduction at a fraction of the cost of an unmolested mid-1980s production Purdey.
