CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE CSA CONVERSION SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1816 MUSKET CIRCA 1861. 42” smoothbore .69 caliber barrel with “P” proof at breech forward of the distinctive patent conversion breech. Lock plate stamped and dated with the original flint era “SPRING/FIELD/1829” on the tail with the “EAGLE” and part of the “US” typically ground off by the Union Manufacturing Company Richmond, Virginia Confederate armorers during the conversion process. For an identical Model 1816 Conversion see Murphy and Madaus “CONFEDERATE RIFLES AND MUSKETOONS” chapter LVII, page 717, plate 8. It is interesting to note that the distinctive tall flat side hammer spur which is original as made by Union Manufacturing for the Knoxville and Chattanooga Arsenal (stamped on reverse “K” and “8”as discussed on pg. 402 of Murphy & Madaus) which they used in making similar conversions is used on this musket. It is probable Union had made an excess and used them up accordingly. Stock with original flint era Ordnance cartouche, Excellent original attic condition. Never cleaned or restored and with all the very handsome metal patina and stock finish showing the war use one would expect. Working order and very good bore. Very scarce.
