Description:
The FN SCAR is one of the most recognizable rifles in the world, having appeared in numerous films and video games. The Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle or SCAR for short, traces its origins back to a 2004 solicitation by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for a family of assault rifles designed around two calibers, but featuring a high interchangeability of parts and with identical ergonomics. Thus came the SCAR Light or SCAR-L chambered in the 5.56 NATO round, and the SCAR Heavy or SCAR-H, chambered for the more powerful 7.62x51 NATO cartridge. In July 2007, the United States Army announced a small competition between the M4 carbine, FN SCAR, HK416, and the HK XM8 which had been shelved previously. Of the four competitors, each one was represented by 10 examples. During the test, a total of 6,000 rounds were fired from each individual rifle in a dusty environment. Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of the test was to determine the Army’s future needs, not to select a replacement for the M4 Carbine. During the testing, the SCAR suffered second lowest number of stoppages, with 226, narrowly beating the HK416 with 233 stoppages. The XM8 suffered the least number of stoppages with 127, while the M4 performed the worst with a whopping 882 stoppages. Ultimately, in 2010, USSOCOM approved the issuing of both the Mk 16 (SCAR-L) and the Mk 17 (SCAR-H). Shortly thereafter, USSOCOM cancelled acquisition of the MK 16 in favor of purchasing 5.56 conversion kits for the Mk 17. Nonetheless, the SCAR 16S (civilian version of the SCAR-L) has become just as popular among the gun buying population as its bigger brother thanks to the greater availability and lower cost of the 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington cartridges compared to the 7.62 NATO and .308 Winchester rounds. The example shown here is a brand new in the box SCAR 16S NRCH. “NRCH” stands for Non-Reciprocating Charging Handle. This means the shooter can place their hand anywhere on the fore end of the rifle (depending upon their firing stance) without having to worry about being hit by the charging handle, as was the case on earlier models. The free-floating barrel is 16.25 inches long and uses a 1:7 inches twist to stabilize the heaviest bullets available to the 5.56 and .223 cartridges. Total length of the rifle is 37.0 inches with the stock fully extended – comparable to most modern rifles but a far cry from the old military bolt action rifles gun makers like FN used to produce. At 7.25 lbs. in weight, the SCAR 16S can be considered to be in the middle of the weight range for tactical rifles available on the market today. Overall, the SCAR is a superb rifle suitable for a variety of tasks, a fact backed up by over a decade of military use worldwide.
