Description:
The R92 Triple Black is one of Rossi’s more interesting lever action rifles. The R92 is a classic copy of the original Winchester Model 1892 rifle designed by John Moses Browning, the fame inventor of the Model 1911 pistol and Auto-5 shotgun. Unlike the original rifle, the R92 features a bolt mounted manual safety. While somewhat out of place, it does ensure the rifle cannot go off accidentally under any circumstances. The Triple Black is comparable to the Marlin Dark Series of lever action rifles. The rifle features a round, 16.5-inch long barrel with installed picatinny for mounting a red dot or scope. Attached at the rear is a peep sight than can moved up and down a ramp by loosening a screw on the right side of the rear sight base. The rear sight is also drift adjustable, as is the front sight. The magazine tube is capable of holding 8 rounds. The stock on the Triple black is actually made of wood and not synthetic materials. The wood furniture is finished in a black on black splatter finish. The finish on the metal is a Cerakote black. This type of finish provides a much greater resistance to the elements than conventional bluing. The barrel is threaded for attaching a muzzle brake or suppressor and comes with a thread protector. The Triple Black uses the popular large loop lever for easier operation in winter conditions which generally requires the use of gloved hands. At the end of the day, the Triple Black is designed to provide excellent service in the harshest environments. Overall length of the rifle is 33.7 inches. It should be mentioned that the R92 in .357 Magnum can also safely fire the .38 S&W Special and the .38 Long Colt. Although the latter is not common, there is some new production of it with smokeless powder. This ability stems from the fact that both of those cartridges are the .357 Magnum’s predecessors, both being slightly shorter in length but having the same body and rim diameter. The .38 Long Colt is more or less the original cartridge and was introduced in 1875 using black powder. It was actually adopted as a standard military pistol cartridge by the U.S. Army in 1892 for the Colt M1892 revolver. It’s poor performance in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War left it with a negative reputation. Eventually, the .38 Long Colt was lengthened to create the .38 Special in 1898. The same was done with the .38 Special to create the .357 Magnum in 1935, which started the “Magnum” craze in handgun ammunition. The R92 would make an excellent partner for any .357 Magnum revolver for which there are plenty of options, both old and new. Such examples include the copies of the Colt SAA as manufactured by Uberti, the Smith & Wesson Model 27, Dan Wesson’s Models 15 and 715, the Ruger Blackhawk and Redhawk, and the Colt Python (original and the 2020 version). There are many other options of course. This was an important consideration back in the days of the Old West. A person who had a rifle and a pistol in the same caliber only had to carry one type of round, thus saving weight. Given the R92 Carbine’s short 16.5-inch barrel, it is easier to carry over long treks and it makes an excellent truck gun. The large loop aids in the operation of the rifle in cold temperatures, especially where gloved hands are involved.
