Palmer American Civil War Cartridge Carbine Rifle
  • 56-50 caliber
  • Single Shot
  • Bolt action
  • Patented in 1863 by E.G. Lamson and Company of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts
  • Only 1,000 Palmer carbines were delivered to Union Forces in the American Civil War one month after the war ended
  • All rifles were subsequently sold to civilians
  • This is the first bolt action rifle to be accepted for use by the US Army Ordnance Dept.
  • The Palmers bolt was machined from a solid block of tubular metal, which had screw type lands and grooves to lock the bolt in place
  • The hammer located on the right side of the receiver like all other percussion fired rifles holds the firing pin at the tip
  • The firing pin strikes the rim of the cartridge
  • Lockplate is dated 1865 and says U.S. E.G. Lamson & Co Windsor VT
  • "M.M." stock cartouche on left side
  • "P" inspector mark on trigger guard bow and finial, butt plate heel, and hammer
  • Rear of action "Wm Palmer Patent Dec.22. 1863
  • A very rare find and a beautiful addition to any collection
