Description:
Great handling 10 bore Dickson waterfowler hammergun delivered in 1875 and still going strong today! Excellent condition, impressive wall thickness, sure handling, and good looks all add up to a waterfowl gun that can be shot with modern non-toxic shot such as Bismuth. Originally purchased by a member of the Cheape family for fowling on the River Tay. The Cheapes lived near St. Andrews and were instrumental in buying up and preserving the land for the Old Course at St. Andrews!   ***   This handsome Dickson 10 bore is written up on page 83, pictured with a full page color photo on page 84, and its sales ledger entry appears on page 86 of Donald Dallas’s well respected bookJohn Dickson & Son – The Round Action Gunmaker”. It is only one of thirty-seven breech-loading hammer 10 bores ever made by Dicksons.   ***   Dickson no. 3179 weighs 8lb 2oz. Loads of original case coloring on the sideplates, well figured French walnut stock and forearm, and nicely figured Damascus barrels. It has beautifully sculpted non-rebounding hammers and extractors. The action is closed by the reliable Jones under-lever.   ***   The 32” nicely figured nitro Damascus 10 bore barrels are chambered for 2-5/8” shotshells and have extractors. They are topped by a solid raised concave rib. The rib is inscribed “John Dickson & Son. 63 Princes Street. Edinburgh”. Typical of the times both barrels are open and have a constriction of 0.005 for Skeet choke. The minimum wall thickness for the right barrel is 0.037 and the left is 0.032.   ***   The highly figured stock and forearm are made of French walnut with a matte handrubbed oil finish. The peaked skeleton buttplate is original to the gun. There is a blank gold initial plate on the bottom of the buttstock. Stock dimensions are 14-1/2” by 1-3/8” by 2-3/8”. Cast is neutral.   ***   This classic waterfowl Dickson hammergun is a delight to admire and to swing. Great mechanical and cosmetic condition. Pictured and written up in the Dallas book about Dicksons it is shootable with appropriate non-toxic shot. A lot of gun for not a lot of money. Picture yourself at dawn with a classic hammer fowler and you begin to understand why you really need this gun.   ***   Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
