Description:
After the November 1918 end of WWI, on February 5, 1919 this pistol was not shipped to the Army but shipped by Colt with 332 other pistols to the National Guard Supply Office Rifle Range “near Boulder, Colorado” [Colt letter] but more specifically identified as Golden Colorado in Goddards “The Government Models”.  Looking closely at the metal finish and clarity of text it is obvious this pistol saw little use.
During this period of Colt production, 1911 pistols were finished with a rough inferior finish that oxidized to dark and referred to as “Black Army” pistols. A close inspection of this near 100% pistol reveals that Colt used the standard finish for this small group of post-war pistols or someone did not like the rough finish and refinished this pistol with a classic Colt blue finish. The Colt letter identifies the finish as “Blue” and this pistol has the classic Colt blue finish. However, after looking as close as I can the current finish appears applied after the acceptance mark [eagle head] was applied. Because of the clarity of the text and numbers, it appears to be the original finish.  When finished, the small parts were properly high polished.
A close inspection of this pistol reveals that all parts are original to the pistol- everything is the proper series type- with the only question being the stocks. The standard Colt rows between the diamonds is +or- 15.  These stocks are proper hard wood, identical to Colt, but appear to show 13 rows; if I count right. The proper HP barrel shows strong lands and no rust.
The holster is a very rare totally original WWI Model 1916 holster for the .45 auto. This holster is maker marked CLINTON, for Clinton Saddlery of Clinton, Iowa with the inspector initials. The condition of the holster is in keeping with the excellent condition of the pistol. The magazine is the proper period two tone Colt. Comes with Colt letter.
