Description:
This is a scarce, exceptional Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, manufactured in 1883 and featuring 30" 10 gauge barrels. The model 1878 was produced between 1878-1889 and was the highest priced item in the Colt line during that timeframe. Single bead sight on the solid concave rib marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." at the breech end. The receiver, side plates, hammers, trigger guard and forearm catch are case hardened and decorated with delicate scrollwork and double line borders. "Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co." is engraved in fancy script on the sides of the lock plates. All matching, with the serial number stamped on the receiver, trigger guard, the underside of the barrel, and the forend. The barrels have a gorgeous Damascus pattern from end to end. The gun has retained about 80% of its finish, without much actual finish loss, but does have a smooth patina throughout most of the metal due to natural aging. The stock is in excellent condition, with minimal signs of handling. Some scratches here and there. The forend is in good condition, but there is some material missing towards the front end on the sides. The bore is fairly shiny but there is pitting throughout.
