This is not the commonly seen Ballard revolving hammer rimfire/centerfire ignition system, but a very well executed cap ignition conversion by a gunsmith. The breech has been plugged and fitted with a percussion cap nipple, and the hammer has been modified to suit the percussion nipple. The hammer is the early long hammer with the patent date stamped on it. The action has a strong trigger spring and locks up tight with the early reverse curl lever. The left side of the receiver is stamped “Ball & Williams Worchester Mass.” and further stamped “Merwin & Bray, Agts New York”. The right side is stamped "Ballard's Parent November 5, 1861. The barrel measures 30 inches in length, measures 0.78 inches at the muzzle and retains about 40-50 percent of the original bluing with sharp edges. The receiver and metal parts have all aged to a pleasing patina with a few spots of minor pitting: the rifle shows much better than photographs indicate. The bore is bright with strong rifling and retains the two bladed rear sight with graduations at 100, 200 and 300 yards. The front sight is the original military issue single sight post. The forearm has been replaced with wood that matches the buttstock in finish and color. The military buttstock retains the rear sling mount and metal curved buttplate. The serial number 15575 is stamped into the barrel and the receiver. A very well executed and unusual conversion of a military Ballard to a true muzzleloader. Price reduced to $1450.
