Description:
Handsome John Dickson & Son 12 bore hammergun with rare grip safety and Jones rotary lever opening. Bluing is in very good condition and the stock and forearm have been refinished recently. Dolphin high non-rebounding hammers, extractors, and weighs 6lb 7oz.. According to the Dickson records number 2836 was delivered on June 6, 1868 to a Dr. Douglas. It has a gold stock oval with the word "Forward" on it signifying Clan Douglas whose motto was "Jamais arriere" "Forward,  Never Behind". Great handling hammergun.   ***   The 28” nitro steel barrels were sleeved, are tight on face, and are in great condition. They are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and are topped by a raised, solid concave rib. The rib is inscribed “John Dickson & Son. 63 Princes Street. Edinburgh”. The right barrel is bored 0.728 with a constriction of 0.013 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. The left barrel is also bored 0.728 and has a constriction of 0.030 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. The bores are shiny and the bluing is in great condition but there are a few minor scrapes from normal usage.   ***   The stock and forearm are made of nicely figured straight grain French walnut. They have recently refinished in a satin finish. Checkering is crisp. The forearm has an engraved wedge style fastener and the stock is finished off with a thin checkered horn buttplate. Both have a few handling marks and the right side of the forearm wood shows some damage where the wood meets the sides of the barrel that can be easily and inexpensively repaired. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” including the thin horn buttplate by 1-5/8” by 2-3/8”. Slightly cast off for the righthand shot.   ***   This Dickson is a very handsome and sleek bar action hammergun that has recently been refurbished. Like most of the hammerguns of this era it is very svelte and handles quite well. Great bird or clays gun.   ***   Please note that the photographs are part of the description. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
