Description:
Winchester Deluxe Model 21 12-gauge factory engraved #6 SxS shotgun.

Factory original two-barrel set that was made in 1944, that was special ordered by J B Green of Western Cartridge Company (Winchester) for Gust Maggos, of Alton, IL.  Mr. Maggos was a very prominent business leader in Alton and is credited with introducing Pepsi Cola to Alton, IL in 1935.  He and his family owned and ran the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company in Alton until 1989.  This information is from the Winchester archives. In fact, Mr. Maggos’ initials: “G N M” appear in gold on the trigger guard.

The gun letters exactly as written with the sole exception being the addition of middle beads on both sets of barrels!

Factory Deluxe grade with #6 engraving with two sets of 12-gauge solid rib barrels.  Alton, IL, is on the Mississippi River so having ordered one set as 30”, 3” chambers, choked Full/Full is quite understandable and the second set with 26”, 2 ¾” chambers and choked Mod/IC for upland birds is perfect.

The receiver, outer breech area of both sets of barrels, forearm iron and the trigger guard are masterfully engraved in Winchester’s #6 pattern. (the Grand American engraving is #6 with gold).  The depth, detail and execution of this engraving makes me, an others, speculate that this 21 was engraved by George Ulrich! Update as of 10/25/23..Pauline Muerrle, former Winchester factory engraver has confirmed that this gun was definitely engraved by the master, George Ulrich.  Ms. Muerrle is sending a letter of confirmation!

Picture being in a duck blind on the Mississippi, the last thing you want are gold inlays reflecting the sun into the “beady little” eyes of incoming Mallards…so no gold inlays!  The exception here is that Mr. Maggos’ initials are engraved and gold inlayed on the trigger guard (on the bottom, no reflection) as mentioned above in the first paragraph.

The Deluxe wood is nothing short of exceptional.  Capped pistol grip with a 13 5/8” LOP to the checkered butt with 1 11/16” DAC and 2 ¼” DAH with neutral cast.  Fine Deluxe style checkering on the forearm, butt and side panels is flawless.

This entire gun remains in remarkable 99% overall condition and mechanically perfect.

Cased in a fine, full leather luggage case with cleaning tools.  I believe that the case was added later but it is very complementary and fitting for this exceptional Model 21.

Copies of the Winchester final inspection and of the Winchester search come with the gun and I have ordered a Winchester Factory Letter that is yet to arrive but will be included.
