Description: In 1862 Peabody patented a breech-loading rifle but was unable to perfect it in time to play a major role in the American Civil War (1860-1865). His basic design was based upon a pivoting breechblock, the front of which pivoted down on a transverse pin fixed through both the upper rear of the breechblock and the upper rear of the box-like receiver. As the breechblock 1822 was lowered, it exposed the barrel chamber and permitted the insertion of a cartridge. The rifle was fired by means of a musket-style outside hammer whose lock work was inset into the buttstock behind the receiver. All in all, it was strong, simple, rugged, and design eminently suited for military service. Peabody's first rifles were chambered for a proprietary, rimfire cartridge known as the .44-40-50. This rifle is stamped .44 over the chamber which makes it one of the early production pieces. This is a fine example of a very early production piece with a four-digit serial number of 1822 which should place it into Civil War range (1863-64). The overall condition of this rifle is outstanding with all mechanical aspects in perfect working order. Crisp double click hammer operation (as it should be), strong rifling with plenty of service left if you choose to fire it, fantastic sighting system totally intact & a Great Pebody legend on the left side of the receiver. Once pieces like this are absorbed in the collector’s market they are basically “GONE”. Hard assets are the wave of the future. Being antique it will require no ATF paperwork for the transaction.
