Description:
French Back-action Hammer Gun: 16 ga

This is a nice little gun with nitro proofed steel barrels. It has peninsula back-action locks, Purdy double under bolts, a 3rd fastener, and French rib. It appears to have been shot very little. It locks up tight as new and retains most of the original finish. No case colors remain but the action is clean and bright. All blued surfaces are very good except for the lower tang which has drifted brown. The left barrel bore is perfect while the right on would grade very good with a very tiny dent that will not affect shooting. The stock and checkering are in very nice. The original horn butt plate is near perfect.
The gun was proofed at the St Etienne proof house with powder J sometime after 1900 - (marked “PJ”- with a crown above). At that time this was the universal proof pressure of 12,090 psi for shells with a nominal pressure of 8,000 lup (ca. 9000psi) and should be safe with standard 16 ga 1 oz loads. I have shot this gun for dove a few times and found it a nice performing gun. To provide a margin of safety, I recommend 1 oz 1150 fps or 7/8 oz loads. It has 27 ¼” barrels, LOP- 14 1/8”, DC- 1 5/8”, DH – 2 ½”, Chocked 0.017L & 0.005R. The barrels have 2 9/16” chambers and the forcing cones have been lengthened for 2 ¾” shells.
