Description:
I bought this rifle 15 years ago. Nothing has changed aside from me keeping it lubed, mint and in the safe.  I bought it as a Bob Emmons build in 300 Apex, (he a famous stockmaker/rifle builder who passed in 2011). The Emmons name is under the butt plate. Emmons rifles like this have brought $3k and up…up… Do an online search and you can verify… The 300 Apex was a wildcat, made from resizing 300 H&H casings to change the shoulder angle.  It is reportedly not that far from the ballistics of that and the 300 Winchester magnum. The action is from a 1917 Eddystone and the barrel is custom. Jaeger custom trigger.  The rifle is in excellent condition…bore perfect…stock great with "wow" checkering and work, but for some minor handling marks in obscure places coming in and out of a safe. The scope base required appears to be a one-piece Leupold. Let me give you some other great detail.  Here's the description from the listing of 15 years ago:

This is a super nice sporter! This rifle belonged to well known master stockmaker Bob Emmons. It is built using an Eddystone U.S. Model 1917 action and is chambered for the .300 Apex cartridge. The rifle is gorgeous and the stock work is wonderful. The barrel measures 24" in length and is without sights. The rifle features a hinged floor plate and a Jaeger trigger. The stock features wonderful fluer-de-lis checkering, ebony fore end tip and grip cap, swivels, shadow-line Monte Carlo cheekpiece and Nieder style buttplate. Overall condition is excellent with about 98% blue finish remaining. There is some edge wear to the floorplate and one small stain on the butt plate. No pitting anywhere. The stock is in excellent condition with the exception of a tight crack behind the receiver. The balance of the stock is just gorgeous with only a very few light handling marks. The mechanics appear to be in perfect working order and the bore is excellent. This rifle comes with a fire-formed case (based on the .300 H&H) which could be the basis for a custom set of reloading dies (Redding Reloading Equipment, 1089 Starr Rd, Cortland NY 13045 can make dies using the case). This is a wonderful rifle and would make a worthy addition to a custom sporter collection.

Why am I selling it so reasonably?  Primarily, I never broke the code how to reload for it.  I have reloaded thousands of rounds, but mostly all in common calibers. After buying it, I looked for 300 Apex dies for many years, but was always resistant to have a set specially made for $500 what would cost $35 in 30-06.  It was a similar hunt for 300 H&H brass. I put it away and mostly forgot about this rifle... Lots of others to shoot to keep me outta the bars. I came into the brass by sheer luck and found two sets of 300 Apex dies.  BUT, my resizing of that 300 H&H brass gave me the correct shoulder angle from pics of 300 Apex rounds, but it was far lower than the fireformed brass that came with the rifle. Last pic below is of the fireformed brass left and what came out of the 300 Apex sizer die on the right.  THEREFORE…I have determined that there are two different cartridges for "300 Apex". One about the brass length of 30-06 brass and the other longer as in 300 H&H.  Pretty obvious that the dies I have acquired are not correct...which brings us back to Redding and having dies made as stated in the original listing above. I've got quite a few rounds of 300 H&H brass that can come to you cheeeeply...

For me, get the fork...I'm done...for I’m getting rid of most of my guns. I’m in the 4th quarter of a non-overtime game, pushing 8 Zero and don’t want to hear from Heaven (?) that old what’s her name sold all my stuff for spit…as I have seen with other dearly departed pals more than a couple of times. So a deal for you (if you have the right stuff) and I’ll only feel a little bad…selling it for a half or less of what it may be worth...better than spit...

So, if you are a reloader and wish to buy a rifle for perhaps far less than what others by Bob Emmons have brought, here’s your chance. I’ll need a USPS money order and the FFL to where it’s going.  If by luck you are a Missouri resident, I’m in the Kansas City area and you can save shipping and FFL fees by you simply picking it up. Short of that, shipping will be $70 insured/signature required…to the lower 48.

Lastly...take away the mystery of the wildcat caliber and this Emmons rifle should be up there in the $3k+ range...not hopeful thinking, but by what others have gone for...
