PRICE REDUCTION
New York State ordered 19,500 Model 1871 rifles, chambered for the 50-70 government cartridge, in two blocks, a first block of 15,000 rifles and a second block of 4,500 rifles; 1,500 carbines were ordered concurrently with the second block rifles. The patent date of 1871 on the tang identifies this rifle as in the first block. These rifles are built with a modified Type 3 action with a locking feature. This action, called the “locking action” or “militia action” provides an automatic safety feature. As described by Layman in Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World, “The ‘locking action’ incorporates some internal modifications. It is loaded exactly as the conventional Rolling Block action [1870 model] is, by cocking the hammer, rolling the block down and inserting the cartridge. However, when the block is raised the hammer automatically drops into a safety notch so that it must be returned to full-cock before it can be fired.” The action of this rifle functions perfectly. Overall, the rifle is in very good condition. See the photos to judge the condition for yourself. The metal surfaces have been left armory bright. There are spots of tarnish scattered over the barrel and action; there is no pitting of the metal. The tarnished spots can be reduced or eliminated by rubbing with fine steel wool; I chose to leave the metal “as is.” There is one minor split in the stock along the ramrod channel and numerous dents most of which are concentrated on the underside of the buttstock. Rack storage could have produced the several dents on the underside of the stock just above the lowest barrel band. The bore is excellent, bright with strong rifling. The rifling was originally cut shallow. The butt stock is stamped 30th SEPT CO./97 on the right side, which indicates the rifle was stored at the 30th Separate Company Armory (also known as the Elmira Armory) at Elmira, NY.
