Description:
Early in World War I, the German army developed a small hand grenade that was handy for a soldier to carry and to throw, making it an effective offensive and defensive weapon. They called it the Eierhandgranate for egg hand grenade. It is an appropriate name as the grenade is about the size of a jumbo sized chicken egg.

Presented here is an nice example of the German Model 1917Na Eierhandgranate, which has been deactivated for safe handling and display. The Model 1917Na body has a raised ring around the center to provide the soldier with a better grip, as opposed to the earlier Model 1917, which had a smooth body. This particular M1917Na has an earlier style 1913 fuse.  This example of a German Eierhandgranate would be a nice piece to display in a World War I collection or as a stand alone conversation piece.
