Description:
"This pair came to us separately and noted expert John Kopec had documented that Serial number 5945 had the backstrap of 11467 when he first examined it. On his second time examining the gun, someone had renumbered the back strap. After we acquired serial number 5945, we purchased serial number 11467 from someone who came into our store to sell it. We then noticed that the backstrap on serial number 11467 is 5945. We contacted Mr. Kopec and he put an addendum to each letter and we are now selling these guns as a pair. They were obviously together during their period of use and are once again reunited.

Serial number 5945. 45 LC caliber with a 7 ½" barrel. This is a cavalry model inspected by O. W. Ainsworth. The metal has a dark gray patina. The grips are period replacements. The “US" and the patent dates on the left hand side of the frame have been removed. This is very commonly found on both the Indian captured guns and deserter guns. This gun was part of lot 6 issued to the US Cavalry and lot 5 and 6 were the guns shipped to the 7th cavalry. Several gun in the same serial range have provenance to the 7th cavalry and the battle of the little big horn. This gun comes with a letter from noted Colt expert John Kopec. Mr. Kopec notates the minor alterations made to the gun including the barrel being shortened and the backstrap renumbered. Very fine Possible Custer range Colt single Action Army!

Serial Number 11467. 45LC cavalry model with 5 1/8" barrel. This is a cavalry model inspected by O. W. Ainsworth. This gun during the period of use. This gun has a even brown patina throughout the metal with traces of an old nickel finish in the protected areas. The grips have been decorated with an aluminum medallion and brass diamond shaped inlays. This gun comes with letter from noted Colt expert John Kopec. Mr. Kopec says this was a gun shipped to the state of Virginia and then subsequently sold to surplus dealer Herman Boker. Mr. Kopec also listed all of the period alterations. Since Mr. Kopec’s letter, action has been repaired and works properly.
