Barrel flat marked ""H.W. Mortimer & Co. London Gun Maker to his Majesty No. 227"". Mortimer's contract records show that payment was made in 1771 and states that Mr. Henry Mortimer was paid ""for firearms for the mail guard."" Payment continued up to 1790. The lock plate has a sliding safety. Barrel is 9.5"" and overall length is 14.5"". Bore is approximately .60 caliber. Proof marks on barrel is crown over ""V"" and crown over ""CP"", both being black powder proofs from the year 1672. Brass parts are excellent and have a pleasing even patina. Stock is very good plus with no damage, except for a small wood repair just bellow the rear side plate screw. Action works perfectly. A handsome English flintlock.
