Description:
The M1905 bayonet was originally made to fit the Springfield Model 1903 rifle and then later the M1 Garand rifle. The first period of production of the M1905 ended in 1922 following the end of WWI. After WWII began, a second period of production occured in 1942 and 1943. While very similar to the first production bayonets, the second production M1905's had bakelite grips. In 1943, the US military adopted the shorter M1 bayonet for the Garand and had over one million M1905 bayonets shortened to the M1 length.

The M1905 bayonet featured here is from the first production period and was made by Springfield Armory in 1920. It is all original and in very good condition. It has not been altered and has an overall length of 20.5 inches with a 16 inch blade. The blade has the proper parkerized finish, which has no rust or chips nor has it been sharpened. The blade shows scabbard wear, as can be seen in the photos. The bayonet's catch mechanism works well with a strong spring. Markings stamped on the blade are "SA", the Ordinance flaming bomb, and "1920" on the reverse side and "US" and the serial number on the obverse side. The walnut grips are not chipped or damaged. The reverse side of the grips have "HALPER" engraved in block letters. I suspect that this is the name of a soldier to whom the bayonet was once issued to.

The scabbard is an M1910, which has a wooden body covered by rawhide and that covered with a canvas sheath. There are some numbers stamped on the mouthpiece, which can be seen in one of the pictures. Overall, the sheath is in good condition with some staining on the canvas. The canvas sheath appears to be a World War II Marine Corps replacement cover. The Marine Corps replacements were very similar to the early Model 1910 covers with a sewn seam up the side and a one piece folded black leather tip. The Marine Corp replacement also had the hanger flap sewn lower than the earlier covers. The only part of this scabbard that is not original is the double wire hanger, which is a reproduction.

Early M1905 bayonets with M1910 scabbards seem to be hard to find, especially at this price. This would be a good opportunity to get one for your rifle or to display with your collection.
