Description:
Nice early Winchester Reloading Tool from the 1870's Frontier Era when Winchester Repeating Arms introduced the Model 1873 Rifle with reloadable center fire cartridges.  If you had a bullet mold and this tool, some lead, powder, and primers, you could survive out on the frontier when you ran out of cartridges and the nearest hardware store was hundreds of miles away.  This was the big drawback of the Henry Rifle and Winchester Model 1866 that used rimfire ammunition.  Once you ran out, you were in big trouble!  That all changed with centerfire and the Model 1873 was nicknamed The Gun That Won The West.   This is why the 44 Winchester (today called the 44-40) was known as the "Fronteir Caliber" Companies like Colt and Remington were quick to chamber their Model 1873 Single Action Army and Model 1875 respectively in this so that frontiersman only needed one cartridge.  The Model 1875 was an improved and much stronger replacement for the Winchester Model 1874 tool which was designed by Oliver Winchester's son Wirt.  Unfortunately, the handle had a tendency to bend...they were dipped in gold or black paint.  The 1875 had a thicker body with ribbed handles although it still was cast in iron with Winchester's September 20th, 1874 Patent which is visible on the top.  "44 W.C.F."  is stampe on the right side near the hinge. The tool is in pretty good shape compared to most you see as it still has a bit of its original gold enamal paint in the protected areas and quite a bit when you open it and down inside the spoon handles. The decapper pin is long gone as most are.  If you've got a 1st or 2nd Model 1873 Rifle, Carbine, or Musket, this would be a great accessory to pair it with.  This tool helped make the '73 one of the most famous guns in American history.  $18.00 shipping in lower US 48.
