"This barrel was found by one of the vaqueros "kinenos" in a pasture on the King Ranch. It sat on the desk of Leonard Stiles foreman of the Santa Gertrudis Division. I tried for years but he wouldn't sale. I finally bought it at his Estate Sale." The barrel overall length is 11-1/2 inches including the tang for the mounting screw. The octagon portion is 9-1/2 inches. The bore is approximately 60 caliber. Artifacts from the King Ranch are very rare. The kinenos (king's men) pledged loyalty to the ranch and were forbidden to take items from the ranch. For generations they had been born, lived, worked, died and buried on the ranch. We have not identified the barrel although it appears to be an early flintlock The Spanish military had been in what is now South Texas followed by Mexican military long before the ranch was founded in 1853.
