Description:
The Rhino is unusual for a revolver in that the barrel is in-line with the bottom chamber of the cylinder. This was designed to reduce the recoil normally associated with high-power revolvers by putting the recoil force in-line with the shooter’s grip rather than being directed over it. Taking advantage of their design, Chiappa builds the Rhino’s frames out aluminum making the revolver very lightweight. It is rare for a pistol to be chambered for a magnum round to be both lightweight AND low recoil. That the Rhino's design works is exemplified by the fact that the revolver has been in continuous production since its debut in 2010. However, the Rhino is not the first revolver to use a low-axis barrel. The famous Mateba Auto-Revolver also used this feature, though its design is much more complicated than the Rhino’s. Both revolvers were designed by Emilio Ghisoni (1937-2008).
The 60DS model shown here has a black anodized finish. As the “6” in “60DS” indicates, the barrel is 6 inches in length. The front sight is a fiber optic sight, and the rear sight is of the adjustable type. The grips are walnut. There is a hammer cocking indicator in front of the hammer. The external cocking lever is not the actual hammer. It is merely a means of cocking the internal hammer. If the external “hammer” is cocked back for single action mode, it will return forward when released but the Rhino will NOT fire as the internal hammer is still cocked. To de-cock the revolver, the user simply needs to pull the external hammer back, and while holding it back, pull the trigger and slowly ease the hammer back to the forward position as with a normal revolver. The process is very easy. Accessories include three moon clips, a polymer device used to remove empty cases from the moon clips, a rear sight adjustment tool, a manual, and a barrel cleaning brush.
