Description:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are so proud to offer this fine example of Marlin's first side eject rifle, the model 1889. This one is decked out in deluxe form, with a checkered pistol grip stock made of fine walnut. Made in the year of our Lord 1891, she is in very good condition for being 132 years old. She has been reblued, but the factory markings are all legible. The action is crisp and smooth, and works as designed, including the half cock safety. The bore of the 24 inch octagonal barrel is quite good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. A few patches of light pitting are the only detraction. The rear sight is fitted with the famous Marlin "fish hook" elevator. She is chambered in 38-40 WCF, which is actually a .40 caliber bullet. Winchester did not wish to confuse by having a 44-40 and a 40-40. The walnut, also refinished, is also in very good condition. Only a few light handling marks can be found. The serial number, 47977, can be found on the receiver, tang, stock, and butt plate. The fine folks at the Cody Museum verified the original specififications of this rifle. It is interesting to note that the 1889 is the only Marlin to have a lever retainer built into the frame. Only about 55 thousand were produced, and much fewer were made in deluxe form. When asked why Marlin rifles are so valuable, I point to the numbers. Only about 360 thousand were made in all models combined. That includes the 1881, 1888, 1889, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, and 1895 models. Compare that to the Winchester 1894, which sold over 6 millions copies, alone. The Marlin 1889 has really gained in value, even when compared to other Marlin models. The plainest rifle with lots of use typically still brings thousands, telling me that it is a favorite among collectors. If you have been looking for the right Marlin 1889 to collect or for investment, but want the added clout of a Cody verified deluxe special order, then look no further.
