The 29 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver possessing better knockdown power than any revolver or semi-auto pistol in production at the time of its introduction (1955). The example here is one of the “Classic” models. Its features include: a 4-inch barrel with ¾ lug, square butt frame, .400-inch grooved target trigger, .500-inch target hammer, ramp front sight with red insert, and white outline on the rear sight blade. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The grips are checkered target types. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “target stocks.” The 29’s popularity increased drastically in 1971 with the release of the film Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood. Although the 29 he normally carried had the 6.5” barrel, some scenes as well as posters depicted him with the 8.375” barrel. Indeed, of the two 29 revolvers used in the film, one was a 6.5” and the other an 8.375”. For the actual shooting sequences however, a Model 25 in 45 Colt was used as the 5-in-1 blanks were plentiful while 44 Mag blanks were yet not available. In the real world, the Model 29 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. This example is new in the box. One very nice feature of the 29 is that like any 44 Magnum revolver, it will also safely fire the .44 S&W Special and .44 S&W Russian cartridges in addition to the .44 Magnum. This allows the owner to practice with the gun frequently and not have to worry about hurting their wrist. The .44 S&W Russian would likely produce little if any felt recoil given the light powder loads it uses, especially if Cowboy Action loads are used.
