Description:
1860 Spencer Breech Loading Rifle used by the 5th and 6th Michigan Cavalry led by GENERAL GEORGE A. CUSTER at the BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG! Serial No.1918. 52 Cal., 30" barrel, 7 shot repeating rifle. Spencers from serial no. 1000-2050 were issued to the 5th and 6th Michigan cavalry in January 1863. 1000-1550 were shipped 12/31/62, and 1551-2050 2 weeks later. These were the first Spencers issued in the CIVIL WAR. The first to see combat were guns bought and issued to COL J.T. WILDER'S LIGHTNING BRIGADE and used at HOOVER'S GAP, TENN. in June 1863. The Union victory with Spencers under CUSTER at the EAST CAVALRY FIELD on 7/3/1863 against JEB STUART'S CAVALRY very well was the turning point of the whole battle of GETTYSBURG. LEE's plan was for JEB STUART to come around the back of CEMETARY RIDGE while PICKETT was attacking from the from. That obviously didn't happen and probably saved the UNION. This was done withe firepower of these SPENCER RIFLES. I can't think of a more historic weapon at GETTYSBURG. In 1999 Historian Wiley Sword wrote an article on these rifles and at that time he only knew of a few examples. I believe probably at least 100 survive. I've seen or heard of at least 50 and  I've handled probably more than anyone (28) and this one is a fine condition example. This in 55 years of collecting. This rifle has no original finish remaining. None do. It is in untouched condition. It is all there and functions well. The cartouche is very visable which is extremely rare on surviving examples. A truely rare find for a GETTYSBURG OR CIVILWAR COLLECTION! Please call 973-214-3407 with questions. Thankyou
