Description:
Dimensions: (exterior overall) 4-1/4" x 12-3/4" x 31-3/4" and (interior) 30". Note: barrel slots are 30" to 30-3/8" in 1/8" increments due to increased angle from bottom slot to top slot. Likewise, spacer blocks are for 26-1/2" to 26-7/8" in 1/8" increments. Weight: 12.2 lbs Updated photos - 3/9/24

Comments: This case is essentially a Tolex-style case identical in construction and details to the Tolex-style cases sold by BrowninG from 1956 - 1959. These do not appear for sale very often, especially without a 4-bbl gun included.

It is NOT BrowninG 'branded' (does not have the bronze oval 'Gun Case by BrowninG St Louis, Missouri' emblem anywhere on the case) but is the same type case that was available during the same period as the Tolex gun cases made for, and marketed by BrowninG.

Amazing condition for a lightly used well-kept treasure with a few light scuffs or impressions on corner covers. Only 3 stitches are broken or frayed on the whole case - the rest are absolutely clean and perfect. Some light lube marks evident in the bottom of the breech end extra bbl set dividers (photos 5 & 9) and light powder residue on the spacer blocks at the muzzle end (photo 8). I believe both will clean-up with dry-cleaning fluid or the like. One key included (photos 1 & 6). Extra block for various LOP. No tears in exterior or interior fabric. There is normal rub wear of the fabric texture (only) in the breech end of the barrel slots (photo 9).

Brass hardware - Presto locks with Excelsior (Stamford, CT) center hasp, and brass 'stop' hinges. I believe BrowninG selected bronze hardware and Garfield (NJ) locks for their proprietary 'branding' of their Tolex cases. Solid and tight - everything functions perfectly, including the classic sound of the 'flippers' when the lock hasps are released for opening. It just brings a smile to your face and would compliment and complete any 'period' collectible gun (especially a high-grade Superposed) that is deserving of, and is missing a case.

I am aware that some of these cases were sold by Simmons Gun Specialties and Kerr's Sporting Goods of Beverly Hills, CA. I am also aware of 3 rifle cases made in the same fashion - that is, the stitched corner covers/protectors are oriented the 'length' of these cases as opposed to the 'width' (or 'ends' as with the BrowninG Tolex cases). I have seen other cases with the same construction as BrowninG Tolex cases but in different color combinations and Presto locks - for early Purbaugh tube sets. I believe all were produced by the same manufacturer. If you know 'who', I'd like to know, as well.

This particularly-configured case is what was available (and is MOST period-correct) for 1956 (and beyond) Superposed 12 gauge owners who purchased Simmons small gauge barrel sets to make a 4-bbl skeet set, or BrowninG barrels sets  special ordered in 'combinations' of gauges and/or extra barrels from 1960 thru 1971. See 'Historical Notes', following.

This is a CASE ONLY - NO GUN is included. But this case originally housed a 1959 Gr V by Nelly Watrin with 3 extra small-gauge Simmons barrel sets.

I am also very familiar with a 1956 Gr II 12ga with 4 'factory' sets of bbls (all 12ga) and forearms for which this case would be a perfect compliment (see configuration comments, next paragraph). If you happen to own this unique Gr II - Congratulations! I would certainly welcome the opportunity to discuss Superposed guns - we obviously have similar taste and perhaps, like collecting interests.

To my knowledge (and familiarity with the BrowninG pre-war and Tolex cases AND their contruction) this case is all original and will accomodate up to 30" bbls. It is configured for 2 bbl sets with forearms, and 2 bbls sets without forearms. The barrel dividers, spacers and blocks are all removable so the case can easily be reconfigured. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, I build replica pre-war cases using original details and techniques and would be glad to assist you.

Historical note: BrowninG first offered the 4-bbl Airways style case ONLY with 'All Gauge Skeet Sets' introduced in 1972. Prior to that, the highest number of barrel sets available in a Hartmann case for Superposed was 3. It was called a Model 'SXX' (1960 - 1967) and with the beginning of new product number designationa, a Model 1415 from 1968 thru 1970. Airways Industries cases are first-pictured in the 1971 catalog and continued the new product designations. Source: Browning product catalogs 1956 thru 1977.
