Description:
COLT DETECTIVE SPECIAL (Third Series) in .38 caliber. ATTENTION COLT COLLECTORS The Colt Detective Special is a six shot Cal. 38 Special, double-action revolver with a 2-inch barrel originally introduced in 1927. The pistol went through several issues or series, each one modifying the pistol somewhat to enhance its serviceability. The Third Series reportedly ran from 1973 to 1986 according to published information from Colt. The changes for the Third Series included a new shroud extending down from the barrel enclosing and protecting the ejector rod, the front sight was changed to a full ramp, and oversized wood grips covered the front frame strap. The Third Series also featured improvements to the revolver’s internal lockwork as well.

As mentioned, the Detective Special’s Third Series was purportedly released in 1973. However, given the pistol’s serial number of B44022, the “Colt Detective Special .38 Production Information” chart places its manufacture probably sometime in late 1971, as does Colt’s “Find Serial Number” look-up. Apparently the 1973 published timeframe for the manufacture of the Third Series is just an estimate by Colt, according to emails from the Colt Archives, and they indicated that there are some variations that can happen close to transition periods. Unfortunately, there is no way to accurately determine when the first Third Series revolver was actually manufactured. Colt did not keep any serial number record of the change-over, but just gave it the next sequential serial number in the production run (also per the Colt Archives). Given the early date of manufacture of this pistol, it would certainly place it among the first Series Three Detective Specials to be manufactured. Who knows, it could even be the first!

I have owned this pistol for well over 40 years. It has been used as a home defense weapon and only fired occasionally. The pistol is in very good condition with some holster wear at the muzzle and cylinder front edge. Front and rear sights had been whitened for better visibility and the wood grip is in excellent condition with only a couple of minor scratches. Bore is excellent, and pistol is mechanically sound. An extra set of Colt Factory D frame, Detective Special Diamondback grips are also included. Note: A leather OWB holster in almost new condition is included, although I purchased the Colt for a home defense weapon and never carried it.

Shiping is $65 and the firearm must be sent by my FFL to your FFL.  Postal Money Orders or Bank Cashiers Check accepted
