Description:
This is a rare and exceptionally fine untouched German horn made from a single piece of flatted horn, with wood base (probably walnut) plug secured with small wooden pins. The overall length is about 8.5”, not including the spout plug. I date this horn to about 1625-1650. The iron and brass spanner is inset and can be used on either side of the horn. There are light spherical scratches on the horn surface, revealing it was used to wind a lock. The horn has an extraordinarily beautiful patina, very rich and deep, with deep polish from long use. The beautifully turned spout screws on, and there is some fine sewing thread in the threads to ensure a tight fit.. An old plug remains, and it includes a small vent pick embedded in the end, a handy feature. There are teeth marks on the plug. Wheellocks were used mainly in the 17th c. but continued to be used into the early 18th c. as sporting guns. The working life of a horn continued after the wheellock era. I am not a dealer. This is from my personal collection. Shipping is determined by location.

I am selling two 17th century flat powder horns, both with wheellock spanners. The horns are listed separately.
