Description:
Seller's note: I am not an expert on military swords so much of the information I have in this ad I have gleaned from the internet. I have tried to be careful not to misrepresent the sword presented here. If you have any questions about this listing, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks. Jim Jr.

The Model 1852 US Navy officer's sword was adopted in that year and is still in use today. Over the Model 1852's 173 year history there have been some changes in design and materials. Blade lenghts varied from 32 inches to 30 inches. In 1872 the blade width at the ricasso was reduced from 1 inch to 3/4 inch. I have read that there was a second reduction in width to 5/8 inch sometime after World War II, but I cannot verify a date when that may have occured. I have also read that the original design had a slightly curved blade, which was changed to a straight blade in the early 1900's. I have also read that if the eagle on the pommel faces to the right, it indicates a post-1940 manufacture. Shark skin was used on the grip until more recently when there was a change to plastic grips.

The Model 1852 Navy Officer's Sword and scabbard presented here are in very nice condition. The sword appears to be of post-1940 manufacture, as indicated by the eagle on the pommel facing to the right. The grip appears to be shark skin, althought I am not 100% certain, and is wrapped with brass wire. The grip and wire wrapping are in excellent condition, as is the pommel and brass guard. The guard is marked "USN". The nicely etched, 32 inch, straight blade is in excellent condition with no nicks or damage. Etching on the obverse side includes "U.S.N.", a fowled anchor, and an eagle, along with the stamp, "N.S. MEYER / NEW YORK".  Etching on the reverse side includes the shield of the United States over an anchor, 13 stars in an oval pattern, the Star of Damascus and stamped, "MADE U.S.A."

The scabbard is steel warpped with black leather and brass hardware. The polished leather wrapping is in great condition, clean, with a few minor scuffs. The brass hardware and hangers are in very good condition with some spots of tarnish on the brass.

The black leather belt and straps are in very good condition as is the brass buckle. The buckle has the American eagle and is stamped "Made in England" on the back. The leather is supple with strong stitching. The belt is marked "34".

It is the responsibility of the buyer to make sure that he/she is in compliance with any state or local restrictions on the purchase of this sword.
