These knives were given to my grandfather by Howard in the 1950's. My grandfather was head of all the Lutheran churches from Alaska to California and spent a lot of time in Alaska. I have never seen them used in my entire lifetime and would like to see them go to someone who will display them or use them. My mother kept them on a shelf until she dies and I have kept them in a closet!
Rare set of eight brand new hand carved Hall Howard Weyahok scrimshawed steak knives: These are in their original box, with 8 different scenes on the handles. Howard Weyahok,(1911-1976) was a renowned Unupiat Alaskan artist, famous for Alaskan scenes and wildlife of all sort on different surfaces. This set happen to be on knives, although he did many scrimshaw items on tusk, ivory, animal hides, etc. He was also known as Howard Rock (Weyahok means Rock). Besides being a famous artist, he was also involved in the Unupiat community as an activist, publisher and editor, In 1974, he was voted Alaskan of Artist of The Year and his "Tundra Times" newspaper was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for journalism. Each knife is signed "Howard Weyahok" in scrimshaw, just under each scene. Each knife is 8 3-/8" long, the case size is 9.5" X 5-3/4" and 1-34" tall. The clear top cover has a small crack in the middle bottom edge as seen in the picture. Each scene is different ranging from a group of fishing-hunting boats, one has a sail as seen in the first knife. The second knife is men in kayaks and ice flow. The third is kayak scene with a man throwing spear at a seal.The fourth depicts a Caribou and young with bushes between them. The fifth is a hunter dragging a seal on the ice. The sixth is a house on stilts in the pines. The seven represent a sled and dogs. Finally, the eighth is a sled being pulled by Caribou The handle material is Bakelite. Howard was from Tagara,(Point Hope) Alaska, which is one of the most typical native village in the Arctic. He was also well known for his scenes of Eskimo life engraved and carved in ivory.
