If you are looking for a great quick start to building a "One Off " fine lever rifle or just a nice hunting rifle, please concider this complete 1886 barreled action in Cal. 45-90. This is fully functioning barreled action with some great features.
I have had this action for 35 years. I took it in trade with some other items for some metal work. It had some definite patina on the receiver and most parts.It was diassembled. Some ranch hand had apparently used the rifles receiver edge as an an anvel at least 3 time but the rest of it was in decent shape. It appeared to have been dissembled way back when and never reassembled, the barrel was decent on the outside but simply just not good enough for a fine sporting rifle on the inside. I logged it in, oiled all pieces and stuck it away. The barrel was sold off years ago. There was no wood . Some years later a client wanted two rifles built. One would be an 1885 and the other an 1886. calibers 45-70 and 45-90. The first one built in 45-70,1885 singleshot turned out to be enough recoil for the client and his aging shoulder so the second rifle was canceled. I had jumped the gun and sent the action to Turnbull restoration with the following instructions and of course some suggestions from these masters of the lever.
Machine the blank to full octagon.
Thread, chamber, cut in extractor cuts.
Finish the barrel at 26 inches, .950 at reciever face,. 830 at muzzel ( fast taper )
No dovetail cuts for iron sights ( I had no idea what the client wanted in the way of sights )
Of course all necessary work to facillitate mag. tube etc.
Turnbull supplied all the parts they thought necessary.
Feeding is flawlwess of course as you would expect.
Trigger pull is a crisp 4 lbs.
4 round magazine so 5 shot rifle fully loaded.
Total weight of complete barreld action is 7.5 lbs. ( empty )
I asked Turnbull's not to clean up any of the metal on the action.
The barrel needs to have at least the front dovetail in the barrel properly set up and cut in.
I soaked all action parts, rinsed, dryed and bead blasted receiver and parts with very fine (dust ) beads.
Of course the receiver and all parts need to be filed, stoned and polished and of course the three deep dings must be
professional tig welded up and dressed off. Sorry, I would like to help but I just dont have the time. My number one priority is ALLWAYs my customers projects first. Sadly in this case, this project must go. Offering at $3200. Will consider serious counter offers. PRICE REDUCED to $2950.00 !
