Description:
This is a great looking sword that measures 37 7/8" overall, with a 31 5/8" straight, double-edged blade with narrow double fullers and etched panels on both faces. The blade has been polished to overall bright on both sides. The obverse panel has scrollwork with "THE / ROYAL SCOTS / LOTHIAN / REGIMENT / (regimental crest) / EGYPT / (sphinx)." The reverse has the crown, George V cypher, and retailer marking on the long ricasso: "Wm. ANDERSON / & SONS LTD. / MILITARY / OUTFITTERS / EDINBURGH / & / GLASGOW." The guard has straight quillons with disk-shaped finials, grooved ferrule, and a shagreen grip that has wear along the seam, and an intact braided wire wrap with dome-shaped pommel and exposed capstan. The sword is housed in a leather-clad field scabbard that has lost the throat fittings. Nevertheless, this is a handsome example of a Scottish cross-hilt broadsword, and would make a wonderful item for display.
