Description:
The hammer and lockplate have their brilliant highly polished bright original finish. The lockplate tail is dated 1863 and plate is marked in front of the hammer “U.S./COLT’S Pt F.A.Mfg Co/HARTFORD Ct.” Action works perfectly. The barrel is round and 40” long. It has a military stud style front sight and a two leaf military rear sight. The rear sight has about 50% of the original blue finish remaining. The barrel is perfectly marked with a date of 1863 on the top flat next to the nipple and has excellent proof marks. The barrel has been cleaned non-abrasively and protected with Renaissance Wax. The barrel is attached to the stock by three round faced barrel bands which are retained by screws.   The “Arsenal Bright” finish is present on each of the barrel bands as it is on all metal components.  Sling swivel is located on the middle barrel band. The original tulip shaped ramrod is located beneath the barrel. The furniture comprises the buttplate,  two piece triggerguard,  sidelock screw escutcheons and nosecap.   All parts are finished bright and are free from pitting including the area around the cone where you usually see some.  Lower sling swivel is located on the front of the triggerguard bow. Walnut stock has the raised grain of an un-issued firearm and has probably been re-oiled.   Edges and corners around the lockplate mortise are sharp and two fine cartouches are stamped on the left side.  There is no splittering in the ramrod channel.  Overall condition of the gun approaches excellent on the NRA Antique Scale “all original parts, over 80 % original finish, sharp lettering, numerals and design on metal and wood, unmarred wood, fine bore”.  The elements that detract are the 50% finish on the rear sight and cone.  And the bore has strong rifling but does have some pitting.  Overall, a very handsome  piece and well above the usual Colt musket you encounter.   $3200 with USPS money order preferred payment.  My Door to yours as this is an antique. Shipping shall be actual charges based on destination.  Details:  Contact H.T. Rea at htreaaol or call 713.702.7522
