Description:
CIVIL WAR Import AUSTRIAN CAVALRY Model 1842 Cavalry Carbine 73 Cal Antique

Carved Name, Tack Decorated & Wire Wrapped

Here we present an antique Tack Decorated Austrian Model 1842 Cavalry Rifled Carbine (at times also referred to as the Früwirth Carbine), made circa 1856. These carbines are known to have been imported to the Union and to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. At least 25,000 of the Austrian tube-lock muskets were purchased by the U.S. Ordnance Department during the Civil War.

These very short and handy carbines (not much larger than a pistol like the U.S. M1842) were originally made using the “tube lock” mechanism, essentially a very distinct percussion conversion of a flintlock gun, that was more aimed at saving money and not having to retrain an entire army than being state of the art. They were not long after considered obsolete, but the American Civil War created demand for even what was considered old technology and the Austrians were happy to be paid for their old stock. Before being exported they were converted from the tube-lock system to the more conventional percussion system via several different methods, as is this example, and many were also fitted with ramrods since the Austrian Cavalry carried theirs on their person.

The action is strong (the spur of the hammer has broken off long ago). Ramrod is in two pieces, but seats tightly in place. Good bore, aged. Sturdy tack decorated stock remains in good shape with average wear (minor dents and dings). “RH Fote” is hand carved into the right buttstock. A wire wrap reinforces the bond between the forearm and barrel. A gun that we believe was imported to the US during the Civil War and made a very short and handy big bore sidearm in the post war period.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 14-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .73 percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
