TOWER Dated 1857 with Bayonet
Here we present an antique British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle-Musket, made at the Royal Small Arms Factory (RASF) in Enfield, England, in 1857. The Royal Small Arms Factory was a UK government owned rifle factory in Enfield. The factory produced British military rifles, muskets and swords from 1816 through 1988 when it closed. The Pattern 1853 was Britain’s adopted rifle from 1853 until the Snider system was adopted to transform arms into breech-loaders. In addition to its use around the world with the British military, this was one of the most popular arms for the infantry during the American Civil War.
This one has Nepalese markings on the trigger guard tang. British War Department “WD” broad arrow mark on the right side of the butt stock as well as other proofs and acceptance markings throughout. “VR” mark for Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria).
The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition, dim with good rifling. The stock is solid and shows much use and age with only minor and non-structural splits and dings; there is a repair above the rear of the lock. The front barrel band is a period replacement and is larger in mass but tight-fitting and it does the job well.
