Description:
c1876 DeGRESS Horse Head Grips, Engraved COLT NEW LINE .22 7-Shot Revolver

Fancy Pocket Sidearm Made in 1876!

Here we present an antique DeGress Treated Colt New Line .22 Revolver First Model, made in 1876 in Hartford, Connecticut. Francis DeGress of Bloomfield, New Jersey, patented his method for molded copper "pistol handles" treated with acid and then gilded with silver in 1874. His firm, Wexell & DeGress had locations in New York and Mexico City and they were known to purchase a variety of various makes and models of little revolvers and treat them with engraving and the patented grips. This one features a horse head motif on the right side with a shield on the other. These are quite scarce and highly collectible.

The New Line was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1877. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt. It was designed to be a handy pocket-carry revolver, chambered in .22 rimfire, which was very popular for self-defense in these days.
This example has been around the block. Deeply engraved frame with ornate brass grips. Good grips, but do have a little wiggle. Good bore. The action does not function. (The cylinder freewheels, the hammer intermittently cocks.) Numbers match. A gorgeous little pistol that was apparently no safe queen!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .22 Rimfire (short, black powder)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
