ENGRAVED Antique SMITH & WESSON .38 S&W Safety Hammerless Revolver Lemon Squeezer
With Personalized, Initialed Case “T.H.H.”
Here we present an Engraved, Cased Antique 3rd Model Smith & Wesson .38 Caliber Double Action Safety Hammerless Revolver, made circa 1898 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless models were produced from 1887 to just before World War II. This one is chambered for 5 shots of .38 S&W. These were extremely popular, high-quality concealable handguns, made for decades and still in service decades later.
This revolver features an internal hammer design to remove risk of snagging or stopping the action. There is a grip safety built into the back of the grip frame. The frame is a top-break design that activates the automatic ejector. These are very nice features from the end of the 19th Century! They were known as “The New Departure” to reflect the company's new approach to designing revolvers but became known colloquially as “Lemon Squeezers”!
The combination of fine engraving, gold, nickel, blue and case color finishes set this one apart. The engraving is characterized by floral scroll with punch dotted background. The fitted case is personalized with the initials “T.H.H.” on the lid. The interior of the is lined with golden yellow cloth and even has a space specifically allotted for up to 48 cartridges. Those cartridges in the photo are for display and will not come with the set. The case does not include a key.
The overall condition is very fine. The action is excellent. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The mother of pearl grips are luminescent, smooth and solid. The case is in near fine condition with lightly faded exterior with thin leather covering in places. This is a truly unique specimen that anyone would be proud to own!
