“BABY TRANTER” Revolver HIGH HOLBORN, LONDON, ENGLAND Parker Fields Antique

British Proofed PARKER FIELD & SONS Retailer Marked

Here we present an antique “Baby Tranter” Revolver, made circa the early 1870s in London, England. William Tranter was a British gunmaker and gun designer famous for inventing the Tranter revolver. The distinctive grip shape makes these pistols immediately recognizable. Tranter was born in 1816 in Oldbury, Birmingham, England. He was the oldest son of Thomas and Mary Tranter. He had four brothers and four sisters, and at the age of 14, in 1830, he apprenticed under the arms firm of Hollis Brothers and Company in Birmingham.

This example is British Proofed and London Retailer marked “PARKER FIELD & SONS, HIGH HOLBORN, LONDON” on the top barrel flat. Per The Vintage Gun Journal: “The origins of the business started with John Field, who had been a goldsmith, sword cutler and gun maker at 233 High Holborn from 1783 to 1791. He traded under his name and also as Field & Co and Field & Clarke. When John died in 1791, William Parker went into partnership with his widow, and they traded as Field & Parker. In about 1814, William's daughter, Mary, married John Field Junior.” “William Shakespeare Field died in 1875, and John William Parker Field continued running the firm until he died in 1879. The firm ceased business in 1886 after just over 100 years in the trade. As to the address, High Holborn street was central and very well located; Charles Dickens lived on High Holborn for a while, as did William Morris, the influential designer and promoter of the Arts and Crafts movement.”

The overall condition is very fine. Original blue finish and case colored cylinder (a unique finish for a cylinder). The action is excellent. The bore is in great shape: bright with sharp rifling. The grip is solid. This is a very scarce and high condition revolver from one of the great English revolver makers of the 19th Century.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.
