Description:
Serial #5557, 10 Gauge (2 ¾ inch chambers), 31 ¾ inch Damascus barrels with bright, very fine to near excellent bores showing a few areas of very light roughness and several isolated pits. This is an early W. & C. Scott side by side hammer shotgun marked "W & C. SCOTT & SON. MAKERS & PATENTEES LONDON" on the barrel rib manufactured in 1874. The large "C" grade shotgun weighs in at 8 lbs 8 Oz. and has scrollwork along the edges of the side plates and on the hammers. The side plates are marked "W. & C. SCOTT & SON" with the lever marked PATENT". The underside of the barrels are marked with serial number along with proofs and "Charge 4 Drams 1 ¼ Shot". The barrel flats have the appropriate British proof marks with the water table having the W & C Scott Patent for the action and Purdey's patent bolt. All numbered parts have matching serial numbers. The shotgun is in near excellent condition with the fine Damascus barrels retaining much of the original thumbprint pattern ranging from brown toning to a pleasant perter grey with only two tiny dings in the right tube at and near the muzzle with some scattered scratches and use marks along the length barrels. The side plates, hammers and protected areas of the frame retain generous amounts of smoky grey case color. The finely checkered walnut stock with round pistol grip is solid with beautifully grained wood showing only some very moderate use marks and contusions. The checkered forearm has a small stable crack on the left side and is missing some wood along the right. The stock sports a silver oval name plate and the metal butt plate that rate near excellent with some original color remaining. The LOP is 14" with drops of 2" and 3" at the comb and heel respectively. The barrels are ever so slightly off face with a tight lock up and the lever resting just left of the center. The hammers cock and release with a crisp trigger pull. A beautiful and rare, large bore, W. & C. Scott waterfowl shotgun that could still be shot with the proper low pressure loads. Antique
