Description:
Antique RINGLE .42 Caliber BACK ACTION Half Stock Percussion TARGET Rifle

Mid-1800s TARGET Rifle with G. GOULCHER Lock

Here we present an antique Mathias Ringle Half Stock Back Action Percussion Target Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Bellefonte, Center County, Pennsylvania. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .42 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This rifle is one such example.

This rifle features a large trigger guard and is designed to be used as a pistol grip. This rifle features double set triggers that provide an extremely light and crisp break. The barrel is 36-1/2 inches long and octagonal with a rifled .42 caliber bore. This is a fantastic set up for shooting long range and promises to be a lot of fun still today.

These locks were called “back action” because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler. The back action is often used in single and double rifles, and occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action.

The overall condition is good. Original patina. Strong action, the hammer has seen a repair. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of wear. Clear markings. Nice rear peep sight. “GOLCHER” lock. “M. RINGLE” is marked atop the barrel.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 36-1/2 inches.

Caliber:  .42 Percussion
