PLAINS Buffalo Bison PA/OH Montgomery County, Ohio Gunsmith, Miami Here we present an antique H. Gunckel Signed Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century with a “Pennsylvania Rifle Works” Lock. Henry Gunckel was born circa 1803 in Centre County in Pennsylvania and is listed as both a gunsmith and a cooper. Alternate spellings of the family name are common throughout the documentation and include Gunckle, Gunkle, and Gunckel. As early as an 1850 census he is listed as living with Jacob Gunckel (born circa 1810) who is listed as a farmer, cooper, and gunsmith in Montgomery County, Miami Township, Ohio. They were likely brothers. Henry lived until 1880 and is buried in the Germantown Cemetery in Montgomery County, Ohio. This rifle is quite heavy and would have been particularly useful for taking large game such as bison or elk. The stout octagonal barrel is in .48 caliber. It is mounted in brass with an oval patchbox on the right side. It has double set triggers. The Pennsylvania Rifle Works was located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was owned by George and Robert Dunlap. It was in operation from 1837 through 1858. The overall condition is good. Original patina throughout. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The stock has been repaired around the wrist and otherwise shows signs of use and is solid. Replacement ramrod. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 34 inches. Caliber: .48 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
